The Then President of America

যদিও then শব্দটি দেখতে Adverb, এটাকে Adjective বলাটাও অযৌক্তিক হবে না। কেননা এটা Noun (President)-এর আগে বসেছে, যা Adj এর সাধারণ অবস্থান।।

♦ আমরা এখন তদন্ত করবোযে-

Then শব্দটি Adj-এর আচরণ করে কি না।

নিম্নের বৈশিষ্ট্যাগুলো Adj-এর। Then নিম্নের বৈশিষ্ট্যগুলো প্রকাশ করতে ব্যার্থ হলে, আমরা Then কে Adv বলবো।

০১. আমরা এটাকে Very দ্বারা Modify করে দেখি যে Then শব্দটি Modifier হিসেবে Very-কে গ্রহণ করে কি না। পরিষ্কার উত্তর আসবে, 'না'। 

যেমন..

The very then President of America (ভুল)

০২. দেখা যাক Then-এর Comparative বা Superlative  Form হয় কি না।

The more then President of America (ভুল)

The most then President of America (ভুল)

দেখা যাচ্ছে Comparative বা Superlative Form হয় না।

০৩. এবার দেখি, Then শব্দটি Predicative আকারে বসে কি না।

The President of America was then. (ভুল)

দেখা গেল, Predicatively ব্যবহৃত হয় না।

০৪. এবার দেখবো Then কে Linking Verb এর পরে ব্যবহার করা যায় কি না।

The President of America seems then. (ভুল)

Linking Verb হিসেবেও ব্যবহৃত হচ্ছে না।

বি.দ্র.: উপরের সবগুলো বৈশিষ্ট্য একটি Adjective এর হয়ে থাকে। কিন্তু Then প্রতিটি বৈশিষ্ট্যে প্রকাশ করতে ব্যার্থ হয়েছে। 

কেবল Noun এর আগে বসায়, Then কে আমরা Adj বলতে পারি না। 

তাই উপরের Then একটি Adverb। 

পাশপাশি নিম্নের বাক্যের Thenও Adverb।

a. The then editor of the Merriam dictionaries (Harper 1985)

b. The university's then President (Sports Illustrated, 27 Sept. 1985)

তবে আমাদের দেশে উপরের সকল then কে Adjective বলতে হবে। 

সকল পরীক্ষাতেও Adj কে উত্তর হিসেবে বেচে নিতে হবে। কারণ Traditional লেখকগণ উপরের then কে Adj বলেছেন।  যা আমাদের স্বদেশ অনুসরণ করে। যেমন:

Then = Adjective

Only before a noun

>> That decision was taken by the then President.

০২. Longman

Then = Adjective

Only before a noun

>> a visit to China by the then US President, Richard Nixon

৩. MWALD

Then = Adjective

Always used before a noun

> She was appointed to the position by Connecticut's then governor. 

০৪. McMillan

Then = Adjective

Only before a noun

The then prime minister, Harold Wilson

০৫. Collins

Then = Adj

Enacted by the then Labour Government

*যদিও MWALD বাদে অন্যগুলো সম্পূর্ণ Traditional না।
